Snorkeling in Fort Lauderdale: Guided Reef Tours & Gear Rentals
The best way to go snorkeling in Fort Lauderdale is a guided reef tour to the nearshore living coral reef — one of the only true coral reef systems in the continental U.S. you can reach without a long offshore boat ride. If you'd rather go at your own pace, you can rent snorkel gear and explore the calmer, protected water yourself. Below is how to do both.
We've guided people over Fort Lauderdale's reef and paddled its protected water since 2010, launching from our home base on the Middle River at 2520 N Federal Hwy and from the historic Bonnet House estate at 900 N Birch Rd. This page is the short version of how to snorkel here and what to book. For a deeper breakdown of the individual spots, read our full guide (linked below).
What you'll see snorkeling the reef
Fort Lauderdale sits beside a stretch of the Florida Reef — living coral close enough to shore that you don't need to steam out to the horizon to reach it. On a calm day the water clears over patches of reef, and you'll see tropical fish, sea fans, and — if you're lucky — a sea turtle or ray gliding beneath you. It's genuinely rare to have reef like this within reach of a city beach, and it's the reason people fly in to snorkel here.
Book a guided snorkel tour
A guided tour is the easiest way in — we bring the gear, we know where the reef is worth your time, and a guide reads the conditions so you're in the right water on the right day.
- Snorkel the Reef Paddleboard Tour — paddle out over the reef under your own power, then get in the water. Mask and fins included. Our most popular way to combine a paddle with reef time.
- Jean Cousteau Reef Snorkel Trail Tour — a guided route along the marked nearshore reef trail, built for people who want more time over the coral and less time in transit.

Rent snorkel gear and go on your own
Prefer to explore solo? We rent quality snorkeling gear so you can hit the protected water and calm shallows on your own schedule — no tour required.
- Snorkeling Gear Rental — clean, well-maintained mask, snorkel, and fins, ready to grab and go from our showroom.
When and where to go
Fort Lauderdale snorkeling is best on calm, clear mornings, before the afternoon breeze picks up chop. Sea conditions change day to day — if you're not sure whether it's a reef day, that's exactly what a guide is for. We launch from two spots: the Middle River location (2520 N Federal Hwy) and the Bonnet House estate (900 N Birch Rd).
